The Kanaani is recognized as one of the rarest documented domestic cat breeds in the world, with an extremely limited number of officially recorded individuals. Originating in Israel in the 1990s with lineage linked to the African wildcat (Felis lybica), the breed became exceptionally rare over time. In 2025, verified documentation confirmed its status as one of the rarest cat breeds globally.
